Old Town of Omis, Croatia

She felt empty. Scrubbing off in the river her hands shook.

How could I be sold to satisfy my country’s mortal enemies the Turks? As a young woman, I resisted many temptation from young boys in the village, especially charming Vladimir.

I was sold like a cow to that wretched Turkish general, Ahmed-pasha. My virginity and honor are gone. My town will soon be sold over to the 10,000 Turkish troops, so really my sacrifice made no difference. Someone must do something to stop the Turks.

I know what I must do. Filled with a fiery rage, she threw clothes back and ran home to grab the necessary tools for revenge.

Two hours later the Turkish camp went up with flames killing Ahmed-pasha and hundreds of his soldiers. The young women, Mila Gojsalić had set fire to the munition stock pile. The remaining soldiers scattered back to the boats never to return again.

On a cliff high above the city of Omis rests a sculpture of the real life guardian angel Mila Gojsalić. When I see overhead views like this one from Mirabella Fort, I think about Mila, and I can see clearly why she would be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for such beauty.

This was shot during my vacation in June of 2014 from the perfect lookout point of Mirabella Fort. In the photograph, you can see the Adriatic Sea, Island Brač and the Church of the Holy Cross in this timeless setting of Omis’ downtown.

Plitvice Lakes Waterfalls, Croatia

In a Tolkenian natural environment, high-fantasy legends were murmuring at our ears, while we drove to the waterfalls on one of the Plitvice Lakes trail. Vibrant greens, algae, moss and a fresh wet atmosphere surrounded us.

This very fragile complex of fauna and flora has inspired writers of all times. The story of the Black Queen, who created the 16 lakes after citizens of Plitvice prayed and prayed for rain to fall, that she finally sent thunder and storms until the entire area had become a green lush. Still nowadays it is called the “Devil’s Garden”.

I wanted to explore myself this extraordinary scenery, and chose to do so on an next morning, although clouds had developed and rain started to drizzle for a while. The family breakfast that Volodimir served us was far behind already!

Diving in the oasis of untouched forest, I felt like I was walking in a real life movie where elves and magic Queens would come out from the frame. The smooth movement of the water falling on the rocks, contrasted with the pinkish and grey skies in the background.

Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

During our visit to Croatia, we decided to visit Plitvice Lakes, famous for its enchanted waterfalls and located far away inland towards the capital city of Zagreb.

June 2014, single image, focal length 35mm, aperture f/11, shutter speed 1.6 seconds, ISO 100, 5-stop ND filter, tripod.

Part of Unesco World Heritage, the sixteen different lakes are interconnected by waterfalls, and the rich fauna, as well as the fairytale surrounding forests make you feel as if you had landed in the fantasy landscape from Lord of the Rings book.

We decided to stay for one night at Plitvice Lakes so I would be able to shoot the sunset and sunrise, without worrying about intendancy and early morning drive.

Having booked our hotel at Plitvice Lakes, we drove along the high speed highway, and then onto the smaller winding roads in the mountains, before reaching the lakes and our family guesthouse.

It was a real surprise to discover 400 years old farm, located inside Plitvice Lakes Park and owned generations and generations by the family of jovial Volodimir. He made us feel at home with home cooking of local delicacies and personally distilled Plum Rakia and we enjoyed his stories and hospitality as much as the actual trip to the lakes and waterfalls.

Omis Riviera in the Evening, Croatia

After a beautiful day on the beach, there is nothing as enjoyable as sitting by dusk on the shore, waiting for the sun to go down and watching the rocks slowly turns gold and red.

June 2014, single image, focal length 16mm, aperture f/11, shutter speed 62 seconds, ISO 100, 10-stop ND filter, tripod.

Omis Riviera is a good place to escape from urban life and its bustle. It is also a place of history, which attracted many famous historical figures and even Roman Emperors.

The amazing natural beauty of the Dalmatian coast was well known since Antiquity, when the Roman Emperor Diocletian made the place its retire from Rome. When people begged him to return to the throne in Rome, Diocletian replied: “If you could show the cabbage that I planted with my own hands to your emperor, he definitely would not dare suggest that I replace the peace and happiness of this place with the storms of a never-satisfied greed.”

To capture this sunset shot, I walked for about 10 minutes along the rocky cost. With the cicadae’s singing and pine tree breeze around me, I found the place with the best composition. Perfectly lit underwater rocks creates foreground interest and leads the eye to the rock formation in the centre and further to the Biokovo Mountains in background.

During the shoot the strange thought came to me. If Diocletian was retired here nowadays he could reply: “If you could show the photo that I captured with my own hands to your emperor, he definitely would not dare suggest that I replace the peace and happiness of this place with the storms of a never-satisfied greed.”

Omis Riviera in the Morning, Croatia

Omis Riviera is my favourite place in Croatia. Located in the heart of Dalmatia it stretches for twenty kilometres along a coast of exceptional beauty, with many perfect beaches, small bays, steep cliffs and crystal clean Adriatic Sea.

Stone Jetty in Small Village near Omis at Dawn, Dalmatia, Croatia
June 2014, panorama from 2 horizontal images, additional exposures for highlights, focal length 16mm, aperture f/11, shutter speed 8 seconds, ISO 100, 5-stop ND filter, tripod.

This area has been famous through the centuries, with the first traces dating back to the pre-historic age and of course to the Roman Empire. The stone fragments of Roman inscriptions are among the most important vestiges which can be seen today, carved during the sovereignty of Tiberius, Emperor of Rome, around 30 A.D.

The name “Omis” derives from the Illyric name “Oneon” from the Illyrian tribes of the Antiquity. This meant “little hill” and echoes to the mountain landscape and amazing canyon of river Cetina still in place today in Omis. Dalmatia in fact, was part of the Illyrian kingdom, till the Roman Republic established a protectorate on the land.

On this early June morning, following the beach shore after my first sunrise shot from the previous post, I quickly reached the stone jetty, where the fishermen of modern times enjoy docking their boats, and swimmers can also relax during the hot day.

The waters of the Adriatic Sea were so invitingly clean and crystal clear on this early morning, with their underwater shapes and huge rocks visible as if I was already inside the sea. The whole scene looked very peaceful and serene and I wanted to reflect as much as possible this amazing feel in my photo.

Sunrise in Croatia

Everyone has their own little piece of paradise on earth. Mine is definitely located somewhere on Omis Riviera of Adriatic coast in Croatia.

How it is happen, that Croatia got such a wonderful land? An old legend says: “Once upon a time, God decided to give away lands to the different countries. The best lands went to the countries which had arrived first for the draw. Other lands went to the countries which had arrived later and the worst ones to the countries which had arrived at the very end. When the Croatians finally arrived (even later than the others) there was not even one land left for them.

So the story goes on. And the Croatian people asked, “What should we do then? Where can we settle?” To which, God replied with a smile, “Well, he said, I did store one land for myself, so I have to give it to you now!”

This way, the Croatian people, while arriving the last of all, still got the best land ever created on earth!

My early morning photo shoot started with an enjoyable walk from the house high up in the mountains to the rocky beach. Not a noise, not a person in sight, I enjoyed a blissful feeling on this quiet track through the pine trees. The clean atmosphere of a summer morning, with its rich and fantastic smell of pine, flowers and sea salt, was surrounding me with an exhilarating mood.

Biokovo Mountains ridge in sight, I deepened myself in the clear seawaters, and adjusted my composition to capture the magical light of sunrise, illuminating the white stone boat sculpture in the background.

I felt like it was the day God created this small paradise.

Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo

The magic of Tokyo lies in the mix of futuristic modern landscape and the bustle of the small traditional lanes, full of restaurants and tiny shops. One of the symbols of the city, connecting the man-made artificial island of O-daiba and the Shibaura Pier, is the Rainbow Bridge, with its nickname given by the public to one of the largest bridge of Japan.

The popularity of the bridge name is still featured today in the colourful pillars of the suspension metallic construction, which are found on the pedestrian bridge walkway.

A splendid architectural landmark of Tokyo, it is a metallic giant that links both sides of the city, and can be seen from all neighbourhoods. At night, it becomes an iconic character in a science fiction like urban life.

In my first attempt to find the perfect bridge view, I decided to stand on Harumi Pier, where the view is famous, but too far away from the bridge and with many distracting objects between the bridge and myself.

On my second attempt I went to Shinagawa Pier to try view from the other side of the bridge. In order to get there I went on to ride the monorail over the fantastic urban landscape of Tokyo. It felt just as if I was in a manga or a science fiction movie.

Arrived to Tennoz Isle station by monorail I found that Shinagawa Pier was still far away to get there by foot before sunset. Jumping in a cab, with some body language, I explained driver where to go and reached the location I was aiming at just in time for the best evening light!

I used neutral density filter to smooth the bay water and remove distracting details to guide viewer attention to the Rainbow Bridge itself. The graduate change of colours, from the warm sunset hues to the cool twilight shades put a fascinating emphasis on the bridge itself, and the actual Tokyo skyline, facing us through the metal frame.

The photo gives a sense of the reflecting peace in urban Tokyo, with the Bridge, as a sizeable landmark connecting millions of humans each day, by car or by train.

Path to Enlightenment, Tokyo

With majestic trees and gardens surrounding its buildings, Zojo-Ji temple is one of the typical symbols of Jodo-Shu Buddhism in modern Tokyo. The red and white colours of the walls, surrounded by tall trees and Tokyo skyscrapers form a peaceful atmosphere, away from pollution and noise of the city.

Zojo-ji Temple and Tokyo Tower in the Morning, Tokyo, Japan
June 2015, panorama from 3 vertical images, additional exposures for highlights, focal length 16mm, aperture f/11, shutter speed 3.2 seconds, ISO 100, tripod, pano head.

From each corner of the temple grounds, the Tokyo Tower is visible to the eyes of the visitor. The main temple buildings were rebuilt, after a bomb raid during WWII, and it is nowadays more of a popular walk in nature and meditation shrine for the Tokyoites, than a residence quarter for the 3000 priests who once lived here.

There are many temples and parks around the capital, such as in the Asakusa area, but this one stroke me on the way back from my Tokyo Tower shoot on the previous day. It is all about the juxtaposition of the “old” and “new”, the quietness of the temple and the noise of the city, the green of the garden and the grey of the stone jungles, the ancient look of the wooden temple and modern look of the steel tower.

This is a perfect metaphor for the unique Japanese way – balance between the modern post-industrial lifestyle and old traditional ways. In recent times, the Japanese culture has become a strong mix of traditions and modernity. And this reflects in small details of everyday life. The antique stone pavement leading to Zojo-Ji temple is a passage to the enlightenment of Buddhism, within the modernity of the city.

Woking up early, I walked to the temple through the Shiba park, and as I approached my scene location, the clouds gave me hope for a dramatic colourful sunrise on the temple grounds. On the way I noticed that the top part of Tokyo Tower was not illuminated. It looked ugly and created a real threat to my envisioned composition. Though I decided to proceed and worked on the composition in order to find the best panoramic view including the Zojo-Ji temple, Tokyo Tower and the path to enlightenment.

As the sunrise began, I breathed a sigh of relief. With the glowing red sky in background, the fading Tokyo Tower illumination started to look perfectly in balance with the whole scene. And this also added kind of mysterious mood to the shot and worked well for supporting the main idea of this photo. Finally I’ve got the shot I was aimed for and I was very happy that unexpected obstacle suddenly turned out to support my goal.

Kachidoki Bridge in Tokyo

Kachidoki, literarily “A Shout of Victory” is the most unique and only drawbridge on the Sumida River across Tokyo. It stands in the Japanese capital as a commemoration of Lushun battle in the 1940s, and is one of the closest bridges to Tokyo Bay.

Kachidoki Bridge and Sumida River in the Evening, Tokyo, Japan
June 2015, single image, additional exposures for highlights, focal length 27mm, aperture f/8, shutter speed 44 seconds, 5-stop ND filter, ISO 100, tripod.

Once, it was the main point of passage for commercial ships travelling through Tokyo, but has not opened again since 1970. Nowadays it still fulfils the visitor’s expectations with its round shape and greenish illuminations of the iron infrastructure at night, close to the riverbanks, with Tokyo skyscrapers in the background.

The bridge is an entire character of a Manga comic book “Kochi-Kame” and also of the movie of the same name, relating to the life of a young boy and friends, who used to watch the drawbridge opening and closing again. The steel monster is very close the famous fish market, Tsukiji, waiting to be relocated in 2016.

After spending an exciting morning and lunchtime around Tsukiji Fish Market and its surroundings as well as tasting the local delicacies of sushi and sashimi, I decided to cross over the Kachidoki Bridge in direction of the Rainbow Bridge to preview my next night shot.

However, the metallic beauty of the Kachidoki Bridge, with its iconic shape and past history attracted me so much that I altered my plan to shoot the golden lights reflections on that same night.

Choosing the best position facing the bridge, both with the Tsukiji market and descending sun behind me, I carefully framed the Kachidoki Bridge and the skyscrapers on the opposite bank of the Sumida River.

As the natural light slowly vanished and the electric night lighting came along, with its green and blue shades, I shot many long exposure frames, with a neutral density filter on my lens to smooth the water riddles and clouds shades.

The final result can make you feel this special moment in a part of the city once the liveliest, after the sun has gone down, and all children and fishermen have returned home.

Tokyo Tower in the Morning

There is ultimate quietness occurring early morning in Tokyo, before rush hour and pedestrian traffic taking to the bustling streets. For those who wake early, the beauty of the modern city is breath taking.

Tokyo Tower and Shibakoen Street in the Morning, Minato, Tokyo, Japan
June 2015, panorama from 6 vertical images in 2 rows, additional exposures for highlights, focal length 16mm, aperture f/11, shutter speed 4 seconds, ISO 200, tripod, pano head.

It is the best time to admire the soft round corners of the automotive lanes, the sharp shapes of the skylines, and Tokyo Tower standing as a memory of past building fever, while taller and sharper edifices are created.

We decided to stay in the surroundings of Tokyo Tower, the defining feature of Tokyo skyline. Designed in the 1950s to compete with the Eiffel Tower, its characteristic striking colours, orange and white; stand famous in the central area of the city. Built on an ancient Buddhist site, it still welcomes scores of visitors to enjoy the views of urban Tokyo and even of Mt Fuji, on a clear day.

With its specific arrangements of sodium vapour lamps, from October to July, Tokyo Tower is glowing softly in an orange light, as a seasonal arrangement, famous to many Japanese cartoons and movies. The orange bulbs light the different platform levels and the science fiction look of the tower is striking more than ever in the first hours of the day.

I chose to wake early, and to reach Shiba-Koen Street before the sun starts rising. I setup my tripod and panoramic head and went on choosing the composition with the road and the sidewalk leading the eye to the Tokyo Tower. I appreciated the surreal feel of being in one of the busiest city of the modern world, and focused on this rare moment of solitude.
